Slab on grade construction is characterized by a concrete slab that serves as both the foundation and the floor for the building. This method involves pouring a thick layer of concrete directly onto the ground, which eliminates the need for a crawl space or basement. As a result, the entire structure rests upon this solid slab. This type of construction is particularly well-suited for areas where the soil conditions are stable and where flooding is a concern, as it does not have the cavity typical in crawl space designs.

In contrast, other construction methods, such as raised foundations and pier and beam foundations, do include spaces between the ground and the structure, creating crawl spaces.
